Llangollen Weekend
The club spent the weekend exploring the delights of North Wales.
Abbey Farm campsite in Llangollen our base.
The weekend was broken in two parts.
Saturday an introduction to white water. Sunday a trip over Pontcysylite Aqueduct and through the Chirck Tunnel.
A few from the group decided to paddle the beautiful Lake Bala on the Saturday Leaving the white water to the brave.
The rest of the group headed off to the TNR outdoor centre in Llangollen on the river Dee.
Although full of seasoned paddlers most had no moving water experience, this is a great location to learn some skills in a safe environment.
Outside the centre the river divides around the island, with the upper part being the main run with several drops and the lower designed for slalom with rocks and boulders strategically placed.
Its ideal for practicing breaking in and out, ferry gliding and edging.
The group made the most of it and were improving by the minute and decided to attempt the first drop.
Moving up river to practice some ferry gliding on a wave train.
confidence is high and we are moving on to the main river run and shooting some drops.
A great day on the river Dee. Everyone enjoyed themselves and came away with new skills and confidence.
Serpents tail, maybe next time.
Sunday
We started off from the poacher’s pub for our 9 miles round trip on the canal.
We headed up stream towards Chirk tunnel
Great fun, single file with our head torches on. 800m of darkness.
Next was the Aqueduct, dodging canal boats on the way. a small one first
We then head for the big one
Great views, then time for lunch. Great spot to stop and walk over the Aqueduct for some photos.
After lunch we head back to the poachers, so we get to do it all twice.
We all had a great weekend of a mixed bag paddling and socialising,
Our Saturday night get together for a lovely meal at the campsite.
